As a part of our strategy of providing a clean, low-cost, long-term supply of electricity to our members and their customers, American Municipal Power has committed to purchasing 368 MW of the Prairie State Energy Campus. This 1,600 MW electricity generating station is the largest coal-fired plant under construction in the U.S. When complete, it will be among the cleanest U.S. coal-fueled power plants.
Prairie State Energy Campus represents strategic thinking and action by eight public power agencies and the world’s largest coal company to provide more than 2.5 million Americans with affordable, reliable and clean power for years to come.
Currently under construction, Prairie State will begin to deliver low-cost electricity to eight states in the 2011-2012 timeframe. Sixty-eight members of AMP will receive energy from Prairie State Energy Campus.
In addition to AMP, the Prairie State equity partner group includes the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency (IMEA), Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA), Kentucky Municipal Power Agency (KMPA), Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission (MJMEUC), Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency (NIMPA), Prairie Power Inc. (PPI), Southern Illinois Power Cooperative (SIPC) and Peabody Energy.
